Brass and bronze identification

Brass vs Bronze: How to Tell Them Apart (And Why It Matters for Scrap)

Brass and bronze both look yellowish-gold and both are copper alloys, but they’re sold at different scrap rates in Singapore. Bronze (aka “red brass”) commands a premium because it’s more copper-heavy. This post covers how to tell them apart in 30 seconds.

The Compositional Difference

  • Brass: copper + zinc. Typically 60-70% copper. Yellow-gold colour.
  • Bronze (red brass): copper + tin (sometimes with small amounts of other metals). Typically 85-95% copper. Reddish-gold, pinkish tinge.

Test 1: Colour in Natural Light

Take the item outside or under a white light. Bronze has a noticeable red/pink tint. Brass is more of a clean yellow-gold. The difference is subtle on small items — try side-by-side comparison with a known piece if you have one.

Test 2: Weight

Bronze is denser than brass (higher copper content). A solid bronze piece feels noticeably heavier than a brass piece of the same size. Not a definitive test, but combined with colour it usually gives you the answer.

Test 3: The Scratch Test

Scratch an inconspicuous area with a sharp file. Brass scratches to a lighter yellow-gold. Bronze scratches to reveal more pink/red copper tones.

Common Applications

  • Likely brass: door hardware, decorative items, musical instruments (trumpets, saxophones), plumbing fittings, ammunition casings
  • Likely bronze: ship propellers, statues, bells, bearings, marine hardware, heavy industrial fittings

Ship propellers are a high-value bronze scrap source — if you’re in marine operations, those propellers sitting in the corner of the yard may be worth hundreds of dollars apiece.

Pricing Impact in Singapore

About 10-15% difference — meaningful on larger loads. If you’re not sure, bring it in and let us grade it. We sort on arrival at no cost.

Non-Ferrous Category

Both brass and bronze are non-ferrous, non-magnetic. If a magnet sticks, you don’t have either — you probably have steel coated with a yellow-gold finish. See our ferrous vs non-ferrous guide for the full picture.
