Grade-by-Grade Lead Identification
Lead is a heavy non-ferrous metal (11.34 g/cm³, ~1.5× denser than steel), soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, dull grey when oxidised. All grades are handled under NEA rules for toxic industrial waste. Pricing splits as follows:
- Soft lead: clean pure lead — sheet, pipe, ingot, cable core. Old roofing flashing, pre-1970 plumbing, radiation shielding, counterweights. Free of paint or alloy contamination. Priced off the LME lead benchmark.
- Lead cable sheathing: sheathed lead from old telecom and utility cables (SingTel, SP Group legacy infrastructure). Priced below soft lead to cover stripping.
- Lead-acid batteries: a category of its own — car, truck, forklift, UPS, solar. Priced per-kg of battery (not lead content). See our lead-acid battery disposal guide.
- Mixed lead: alloyed with antimony or tin (solder, type-metal), painted lead, or lead with steel/copper attachments. Discounted to cover refining.
Preparation Tips (and Staying Legal)
Lead handling is regulated under the NEA Hazardous Waste Act. The prep rules below are as much compliance as payout:
- Keep lead-acid batteries upright in transport. Acid spills are a reportable incident and trigger clean-up costs well above battery value.
- Never burn plastic sheathing off cable. Burning PVC releases dioxins and is illegal under NEA air-quality rules. We strip sheathing mechanically at our licensed yard.
- Separate soft lead from alloyed or painted lead where feasible — soft lead prices significantly higher.
- Remove attached steel or copper fittings (old lead pipes with brass, roofing with steel clips) — a few minutes lifts the grade.
- Label battery loads with quantity, type (wet, AGM, gel) and rough weight.
Where Lead Scrap Comes From
- End-of-life car, truck and forklift batteries from workshops, logistics yards and dealerships — the largest volume stream. Pairs with our catalytic converter scrap service.
- Old roofing and flashing from pre-1980 bungalows, heritage shophouses and institutional buildings — recovered during re-roofing.
- Telecom and power cable sheathing — legacy underground cables replaced by fibre and modern polymer-sheathed copper.
- Pre-1970 plumbing uncovered during deep refurbishment of older buildings.
- UPS and solar battery banks from data centres, telco sites and solar installations on 3-7 year cycles.
- Industrial counterweights and radiation shielding — crane and lift counterweights, hospital and dental lead aprons and shielding.
What Happens to Lead After We Buy It
Every kilo is tracked from pickup through export to a licensed regional smelter (primarily Malaysia, some Korea). Batteries are broken open in sealed systems: sulphuric acid is neutralised or recovered as sodium sulphate, plastic casing is chipped and recycled, and lead plates are smelted and refined back to 99.9% pure lead — ready for new battery plates or architectural lead sheet. Lead-acid battery recycling achieves over 99% material recovery — the highest of any consumer product. Full chain-of-custody in our lead-acid battery disposal guide.
Lead Scrap FAQ
How do I tell lead-acid from lithium-ion batteries?
Lead-acid batteries are heavy for their size (a car battery is 12-20 kg), labelled 12V with vent caps or AGM/gel markings. Lithium batteries are light, labelled with a Wh rating, and typical of e-bikes, laptops, newer tools. If unsure, photograph the label and send it — we handle them very differently.
Do you buy lead roofing and flashing?
Yes — lead sheet from roofs, chimneys, parapets and bay windows is prime soft-lead grade. Heritage roofing projects in Singapore often uncover 50-500 kg of lead flashing. We collect and pay against the LME lead benchmark.
Is lead still used? I thought it was banned.
Lead is restricted in paints, fuels and plumbing but still essential in lead-acid batteries, radiation shielding, marine counterweights and some solders. Global lead demand is actually growing, driven by automotive and UPS batteries.
Can I drop batteries at your yard?
Yes — workshop-quantity drop-offs are welcome at 170 Gul Circle during business hours. Bring batteries upright in a tray or crate. For forklift or UPS banks, call ahead so we have a pallet jack and space ready.
Do you handle the NEA hazardous-waste paperwork?
Yes. As a licensed collector we issue receipts and tracking documentation for your company EHS records. Large industrial consignors — workshops, factories, hospitals — get a signed manifest as standard.
How are batteries priced?
Per kilo of battery, indexed to the LME lead benchmark less a processing spread. A typical car battery (12-20 kg) is in the S$5-15 range depending on size, type and LME. Workshops with 50+ batteries per collection get our volume rate.
