Grade-by-Grade Cast Iron Identification
Cast iron is ferrous (strongly magnetic) with 2-4% carbon — brittle, breaks rather than bends, dark grey on a fresh fracture. See our ferrous vs non-ferrous identification guide if unsure. Pricing splits into three tiers:
- Clean cast iron (broken, under 1m): engine blocks, cast iron soil pipes, manhole covers, cookware, radiators, machine bases — free of attached steel, aluminium or rubber. Our top rate, from S$0.40/kg.
- Uncut cast iron: intact engine blocks, lathe beds, full pump housings, long cast iron pipe runs. We cut on site or at the yard; labour reflects in a rate around S$0.32/kg.
- Mixed iron & steel: cast iron with bolted steel brackets, flanges, motor mounts — priced at the mixed ferrous rate (around S$0.38/kg).
Preparation Tips to Maximise Your Payout
- Break large pieces to under 1m. Easier handling, no cutting charge — often a better per-kg rate.
- Remove attached steel or aluminium (bolted brackets, aluminium sumps, rubber gaskets) to move the load into the clean tier.
- Clean off heavy grease or oil. Dripping oil is a loading hazard; a quick wipe-down is enough.
- Drain old boilers and heat exchangers before pickup — hollow cast iron can retain water.

Where Cast Iron Scrap Comes From
- Automotive workshops — end-of-life engine blocks, truck and forklift engines, generator sets. Often bundled with our scrap car service.
- Factory closures — lathe beds, milling bases, compressors, pumps and gearbox casings from Tuas, Pioneer and Soon Lee Street.
- Plumbing and drainage strip-outs — pre-1990 cast iron soil pipes from HDB upgrading and commercial refurbishments.
- Demolition sites — manhole covers, drain gratings, railings and decorative ironwork. Covered by our construction scrap and demolition services.
What Happens to Cast Iron After We Buy It
At our 170 Gul Circle yard, cast iron is sorted by grade, shredded or sheared to mill-feed dimensions, and shipped to regional steel mills — mainly in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam — where it is re-melted into new steel billets, rebar and fresh castings. Recycling ferrous uses roughly 74% less energy than primary steelmaking from iron ore and saves about 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per tonne. More in our recycling vs mining and C&D waste articles.
Cast Iron FAQ
Is cast iron ferrous or non-ferrous?
Cast iron is ferrous — an iron-carbon alloy with 2-4% carbon and strongly magnetic. A fridge magnet sticks to it. It is priced on our ferrous rate sheet alongside HMS and mild steel.
Do you buy old cast iron cookware?
Yes. Cast iron woks, pans, kettles and stove grates count as clean cast iron. Strip wood or plastic handles if possible. Small quantities welcome at our Gul Circle yard; larger hauls get a pickup.
What is the difference between cast iron and mild steel?
Cast iron has far higher carbon (2-4%) and is brittle — snaps rather than bends. Mild steel (~0.2% carbon) is ductile. On a fresh break, cast iron is dark grey and grainy; steel tears bright and fibrous.
Can you cut large cast iron pieces on site?
Yes. For intact engine blocks, long pipe runs or heavy machine frames we bring cutting gear on site or take the piece back to our yard. Cutting labour is reflected in the uncut cast iron rate.
Do you pick up from demolition sites?
Yes. Cast iron manhole covers, drain gratings and kerb frames are regular demolition feed. We coordinate with your demolition contractor or run our own team. See our demolition and construction scrap services.
What is the minimum load for free pickup?
Free pickup is for substantial industrial loads — typically from factories, construction sites, warehouses, or engineering and process plants. Smaller or residential quantities are still welcome at our 170 Gul Circle yard during business hours; we handle unloading and payment on arrival.
