Construction & Demolition Waste in Singapore: Metal Recovery Guide
Every demolition or major renovation in Singapore generates tonnes of recoverable metal — rebar, structural steel, aluminium frames, copper wiring, stainless fittings. Handled right, that scrap pays for itself and offsets demolition cost. Handled wrong, it becomes an expensive waste-disposal problem.
The Recoverable Metal Stream
A typical Singapore factory demolition (say, a 5,000 sqm single-story structure) yields:
- 20-50 tonnes of HMS 1 & 2 scrap steel from structural beams, columns, plates
- 10-30 tonnes of rebar from concrete demolition
- 1-3 tonnes of aluminium (window/door frames, cladding)
- 500-2000 kg of copper (electrical wiring, busbars)
- Variable stainless steel (kitchen, railings, ductwork)
At current scrap rates, that’s S$20,000-80,000 in metal value from a single demolition. Worth recovering carefully.
Singapore Regulatory Framework
- BCA regulates demolition permits and safety compliance.
- NEA regulates waste disposal — construction waste must go to approved dump sites or recyclers.
- MOM regulates site safety (WSH Act) — demolition is a high-risk category.
- Scrap metal dealers handling demolition salvage must be NEA-licensed.
Best Practice Metal Recovery
- Pre-demolition audit — walk through with a scrap buyer; identify high-value non-ferrous (copper, stainless, aluminium) before demolition starts.
- Selective demolition — remove clean non-ferrous first (stainless kitchens, aluminium facades) before structural demolition. Preserves grade.
- Structural cut-up — beams and plates cut to transportable lengths (<3m typically).
- Rebar separation — rebar separated from concrete at the concrete crusher; magnetic separator handles the ferrous recovery.
- Cable stripping — cable runs collected whole; Molten Steel processes stripping with dedicated equipment.
- On-site scrap bins — we deploy segregated bins during demolition, swap them out as they fill.
Scrap Buyback Against Demolition Cost
When Molten Steel is involved from the demolition quote stage, we can reduce the net cost by crediting the expected scrap recovery against the demolition invoice. That often means a partial or full offset on the structural steel component. See our demolition contractor page for how we work.
Documentation for ISO / BCA Audits
We provide full weigh records, grade receipts, and disposal certificates — required for BCA demolition closeout, ISO 14001 environmental audits, and Green Mark project reporting. See industrial services.
