Grade-by-Grade Zinc Identification

Zinc is a non-ferrous metal with a blue-grey sheen and density of 7.14 g/cm³. In the scrap stream it turns up either as die-cast alloy (small detailed parts) or as a coating on galvanized steel — the pricing difference between the two is large.

  • Zinc die-cast (Zamak / Mazak): clean zinc-alloy die-cast parts — old carburettors, door/window furniture, plumbing fittings, automotive trim. Dull grey, slightly waxy feel, characteristic parting lines. Priced off the LME zinc benchmark.
  • New zinc clippings / manufacturer scrap: factory-fresh offcuts from die-casting workshops — consistent chemistry, no paint, no contamination. Our top zinc rate.
  • Galvanized steel: mild steel with a thin zinc coating (60-275 g/m²). HVAC ducting, metal roofing, chain-link fencing, crash barriers. Priced as ferrous HMS plus a zinc surcharge.
  • Mixed zinc: painted, plated or contaminated die-cast — discounted below clean grade to cover extra refining.

Preparation Tips to Maximise Your Payout

  • Magnet test every piece. Sticks = galvanized steel (ferrous rate). Does not stick = zinc die-cast (non-ferrous rate — typically 8-12× higher). A 10-second sort can change a load’s value dramatically.
  • Separate die-cast from attached steel and aluminium (old carburettors often have steel screws and aluminium manifolds).
  • Keep manufacturer clippings clean and dry — cutting oil or abrasive grit drops new zinc to the mixed grade.
  • Bundle galvanized ducting and fencing into tight stacks for fast loading and correct truck sizing.
  • Do not grind or cut zinc die-cast — zinc dust and fumes are a respiratory hazard.

Where Zinc Scrap Comes From

  • Old die-cast hardware — pre-2000 carburettors from classic cars and motorcycles, die-cast door/window furniture from building refurbishments, old plumbing fittings.
  • Galvanized HVAC ducting replacement — commercial MEP upgrades and data-centre fit-outs generate large volumes.
  • Die-casting manufacturing clippings — Tuas and Pioneer die-casters on scheduled monthly pickups.
  • Galvanized fencing, guardrails and street furniture from LTA and town council infrastructure programmes.
  • Marine and industrial zinc anodes — sacrificial anodes from ship hulls, jetties and water tanks.

What Happens to Zinc After We Buy It

Clean zinc die-cast and new clippings are sorted at our yard, consolidated into container lots, and sold to regional zinc smelters (primarily Malaysia and Korea). There the alloy is re-melted, chemistry adjusted, and cast into fresh ingots ready for die-casting again — a true closed loop. Galvanized steel takes a different route: the steel body goes to an electric-arc furnace while the zinc is chemically de-zinced or captured in baghouse dust for re-processing. Recycling zinc uses around 75% less energy than primary smelting. More in our recycling vs mining article and non-ferrous overview.

Zinc Scrap FAQ

What counts as galvanized steel?

Mild steel coated with a thin zinc layer for rust protection — HVAC ducting, chain-link fencing, metal roofing sheet, crash barriers, lamp-post bases. It is magnetic (zinc die-cast is not) — the fastest way to tell them apart.

Do you buy old zinc die-cast carburettors?

Yes. Strip off the aluminium manifold, steel throttle linkage and rubber gaskets, and what remains is near-pure zinc alloy. Motorcycle workshops and classic-car restorers are a regular source across Singapore.

What about marine zinc anodes?

Yes — sacrificial anodes from boat hulls, jetties, water tanks and cathodic-protection systems. They arrive partially eroded (usually 40-70% of original mass). Priced on our clean zinc tier less a light discount for mounting bolts and marine growth.

Is galvanized ducting worth more than plain steel ducting?

Slightly — HMS 2 ferrous rate for the steel body plus a small zinc-coating allowance. Not a huge uplift per kilo, but across a full HVAC strip-out of a commercial building it adds up.

How do I tell zinc die-cast from aluminium die-cast?

Weight and colour. Zinc (7.1 g/cm³) is noticeably heavier than aluminium (2.7) and duller blue-grey versus aluminium’s brighter silver-white. Drop two similar-sized pieces in your hand — zinc feels heavy for its size, aluminium feels light.

Do you pick up die-casting clippings on a schedule?

Yes. Die-casting manufacturers typically generate 200-2,000 kg of new zinc clippings per month. We set up weekly or monthly scheduled pickups, drop a container if volume warrants, and settle on a running account.
