HMS Grade-by-Grade Identification

HMS stands for Heavy Melting Scrap — the ISRI-standard spec used by steel mills globally. Singapore loads normally fall into four tiers:

  • HMS 1: clean steel at least 6mm thick, pieces under 5′ × 18″ (~1.5m × 45cm). Structural UB/UC beams, thick plate offcuts, heavy machinery frames, shipbuilding cut-offs. Priced from S$0.39/kg.
  • HMS 2: lighter gauge 3-6mm steel — thinner plate, light structural, stripped auto body panels, pipe under 6mm wall. Attachments and light rust accepted.
  • Rebar and BRC mesh: construction rebar in T10, T13, T16, T20, T25, T32 sizes plus mesh. Must be free of attached concrete; cut under 6m for transport.
  • Mixed iron & steel: loose unsorted ferrous — workshop sweepings, light sheet, thin pipe. The lowest tier; pre-sorting lifts the value significantly.

Preparation Tips to Maximise Your HMS Payout

  • Pre-sort HMS 1 vs HMS 2 before pickup. Sorting on site saves us yard time and usually lifts your rate quote by 10-20%.
  • Cut to under 6m. Long beams and pipes need permits and slow the load; 3-6m lengths move fastest.
  • Separate rebar from structural steel — different mill destinations, different prices.
  • Remove attached concrete from rebar with a hammer; heavily encased rebar drops to contaminated ferrous.
  • Strip non-ferrous attachments (copper wire, aluminium trim, brass fittings, stainless bolts) — sell those separately at far higher rates.

For full-site clearances our demolition team and construction scrap service handle cutting, sorting and haulage end-to-end.

Where HMS Scrap Comes From

  • Construction and demolition sites — the largest source. Structural steel, rebar from broken slabs, formwork offcuts.
  • Factory closures and decommissioning in Tuas, Pioneer and Jurong — structural steel, tank frames, racking. See industrial scrap services.
  • Shipyard offcuts from Tuas and Jurong — continuous clean plate offcuts, mostly HMS 1.
  • Rebar from reinforced concrete demolition — long rods ready for the mill once concrete is stripped away.
  • Old vehicle bodies and chassis — fed into the HMS 2 stream after fluids and non-ferrous removal.

What Happens to HMS After We Buy It

At our yard, HMS is sorted into grades, sheared or shredded to mill-feed size, and containerised for regional mills — primarily Johor (Malaysia), Batam and Surabaya (Indonesia) and Vietnam. Mills charge the scrap into electric-arc furnaces and re-melt it into new steel billets, which come back to Singapore as fresh structural sections and rebar. Recycled ferrous uses around 74% less energy than virgin ore. Our recycling vs mining and C&D waste articles cover the full numbers.

HMS FAQ

What does HMS stand for?

HMS stands for Heavy Melting Scrap — the international trade term for heavy-gauge ferrous scrap for re-melting in steel mills. The grades (HMS 1 and HMS 2) are defined by ISRI and used by mills globally.

What is the difference between HMS 1 and HMS 2?

Thickness and cleanliness. HMS 1 is at least 6mm thick, clean, free of attachments, sized under 5′ × 18″. HMS 2 is lighter gauge (3-6mm) and allows attachments and light rust. HMS 1 usually prices 10-20% above HMS 2.

Do you pick up from active demolition sites?

Yes — routinely. We stage roll-on roll-off bins, do scheduled skip swaps, or send articulated trucks for heavy structural lifts. We also run our own demolition team where you need a single contractor.

What Singapore rebar sizes do you buy?

All standard sizes — T10, T13, T16, T20, T25, T32 and BRC mesh. Once stripped of concrete, rebar is priced per-kg on our ferrous rate. Heavy sizes usually come from major HDB and infrastructure demolition.

How do I confirm HMS 1 thickness?

A tape measure or calliper on a cut edge. HMS 1 needs 6mm minimum (roughly 1/4 inch). Borderline pieces are safer to group as HMS 2 — we grade on inspection at the weighbridge and upgrade anything that clearly meets spec.

Do HMS prices track the LME?

Yes — regional mill buying tracks global steel benchmarks, which follow the LME. We refresh posted rates weekly but quote firm per load. See our LME Singapore guide for how the benchmark translates to your payout.
